Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said that Ukraine is facing a serious shortage of military personnel due to the mass exodus of men abroad and limited human resources. As a result, the mayor proposed lowering the mobilization age from the current 25 to 22-23 years.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported<\/a> by Politico with reference to an interview with Vitali Klitschko provided by Axel Springer Global Reporters Network.<\/p>\n

According to Klitschko, nearly four years of war have significantly affected the country’s ability to replenish its military ranks. He compared the actions of Russian troops to a computer game where the enemy continues to advance despite losses.<\/p>\n

“Previously, 18-year-olds served in the army, but these are children. Now you can only be mobilized from the age of 25. You can lower this age by a year or two \u2014 to 23 or 22,” Klitschko noted.<\/p>\n

The publication emphasizes that his remarks coincide with a growing exodus of young Ukrainians: in August, the government allowed men aged 18-22 to leave the country, which led to an increase in the number of Ukrainians seeking temporary protection in the EU. In September, EU countries granted more than 79,000 new decisions on temporary protection to Ukrainians.<\/p>\n

The mayor emphasized the imbalance between Ukraine’s human resources and the size of Russian troops and added that the courage to fight remains, but the future of the country depends on whether young people can be brought back after the war ends.<\/p>\n

“We would be happy if half of the young people returned, but for this we need peace, jobs, and a high quality of life. After the war, huge challenges await us,” Klitschko concluded.<\/p>\n
