The administration of US President Donald Trump is preparing to deport Ukrainians who have final deportation orders. According to diplomats, about eighty Ukrainian citizens are among them.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The U.S. Department of Justice said in a court filing that the government plans to deport Roman Surovtsev, 41, as early as Monday. His lawyers said that Immigration and Customs Enforcement may be preparing to deport a large group of Ukrainians, and that detainees have been told they could be taken on military flights to Ukraine or Poland.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Olga Stefanishyna said that the embassy is aware of approximately eighty Ukrainian citizens who have final deportation decisions for violating American law. She explained that US authorities are working on logistics, given the lack of direct air service to Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Stefanishyna emphasized: “It should be noted that deportation is a widely used legal mechanism provided for by the immigration laws of most countries in the world. This is a routine procedure that applies to all foreign citizens and stateless persons who violate the conditions of stay in the United States, regardless of their citizenship.”<\/p>\n

Surovtsev’s lawyers, Eric Lee and Chris Godshall-Bennett, expressed concern that citizens of Ukraine and other former Soviet countries could be deported without the possibility of appeal. They said, “Ukraine is a war zone, it is currently under martial law, and it is likely that any deportees will be forcibly mobilized into the army and sent to the front, where they will face a high probability of death.”<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for the US Department of Homeland Security said that “for operational security reasons, ICE does not confirm future deportation operations,” but stressed that Surovtsev “received full due process” and that “every detainee receives due process and has their claims heard.”<\/p>\n

According to the Immigration Service, fifty-three Ukrainians were deported from the United States in fiscal year 2024. If about eighty citizens are deported, this will be the highest figure in recent years.<\/p>\n

International obligations require officials not to send people to countries where they may face persecution or torture. Rights groups say the Trump administration is pushing the limits of those rules by preparing to deport people with criminal records to crisis-ridden countries, including South Sudan and Ukraine.<\/p>\n

By the way, Ukrainian refugees in the United States are being restored to SNAP food payments<\/a> after Donald Trump signed the government funding bill. The assistance amounts to about $210 per person and is critically important for many families.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that Poland is unable to indefinitely accept new waves of Ukrainian refugees<\/a> and should focus on adapting those already living on its territory.<\/p>\n
