The UK has said that the Ukrainian resettlement programme was created as a temporary mechanism and envisages the return of citizens after the end of the war. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmud has outlined new rules that change the conditions for granting asylum.<\/strong><\/p>\n

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmud said the support program for Ukrainian citizens was initially intended to be temporary. She noted that the government is changing asylum rules and introducing new waiting periods for permanent residence.<\/p>\n

According to Mahmoud, asylum seekers will have to wait 20 years before they can apply for permanent residency. Applications will be reviewed every 2.5 years.<\/p>\n

“So if your country becomes safe during this period, and you remain on this, essentially, basic protection model, then you will be returned to your country,” Shabana Mahmud said.<\/p>\n

She also explained that the new rules aim to change the perception of asylum as a path to quickly obtaining permanent resident status.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the minister announced that individuals who use safe and legal mechanisms will be able to apply for permanent residence earlier than the established deadline. Important conditions for this are employment and contribution to the development of society.<\/p>\n

When asked about Ukrainian citizens, Mahmud clarified that the scheme under which they arrived in the UK was specifically designed as temporary.<\/p>\n

“Ukrainians are not really considered refugees under normal circumstances. This is a specially designed scheme for Ukrainians, and I am very proud that this country has done this, and we will always fulfill our obligations under this scheme,” Shabana Mahmud said.<\/p>\n

The minister added that most Ukrainians express a desire to return home after the war ends.<\/p>\n

By the way, Polish President Karol Nawrocki signed an updated law on supporting Ukrainian citizens<\/a> after the government made amendments that, according to him, make the document fairer for Poles.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that Germany will reduce the amount of cash assistance for Ukrainian refugees<\/a> who arrived in the country after April 1, 2025.<\/p>\n
