Two Ukrainian nuclear power plants – Khmelnytskyi and Rivne – have been operating at reduced capacity for more than ten days due to a Russian attack that damaged a substation important to their safety. As a result of the incident, the plants were forced to reduce electricity production.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This was announced<\/a> by IAEA Director Rafael Grossi.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to Grossi, on the night of November 7, the nuclear power plant lost one of its two key 750 kV power lines. As a result, the power system operator ordered the reduction of the power of some reactors in order not to overload the network. Currently, one of the damaged lines has been restored, but the second is still not working.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Grossi stressed that substations play a critical role in the power supply system of nuclear power plants, as they ensure the operation of safety and cooling systems. Any damage to such facilities creates risks to nuclear safety.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Despite the damage, the IAEA notes that both plants are operating stably and all safety requirements are being met in accordance with international standards. Three reactors continue to operate at limited capacity as decided by the power system operator.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was previously reported that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant was again under threat of blackout<\/span><\/a> .<\/p>\n
