The bill itself is aimed at secondary sanctions against states that maintain economic ties with Russia, primarily in the area of purchasing Russian energy resources. The document was initiated by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick.

Previously, the leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives was in no hurry to bring the bill to a vote, as Trump preferred other pressure tools – in particular, increasing tariffs on imports from India, one of the largest buyers of Russian oil. Now, according to an administration representative, the president is ready to sign the document and made this clear during a statement on Sunday.

Despite this, the White House insists that the law should contain clear provisions that would ensure the president has the final say in applying sanctions.

“It is key for the administration that there is a mechanism in the legislation that leaves the final decision to the head of state. If this is taken into account, the president is ready to consider signing,” the official emphasized.

He also added that the US is not stopping diplomatic contacts with Russia regarding a possible end to the war: “Negotiations are ongoing, they are just not in the spotlight right now.”

Recall, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington has almost reached the limit in introducing new restrictions against the Russian Federation, since most key sectors of its economy have already been subject to sanctions . Further US efforts will be aimed not at introducing new measures, but at strengthening control over compliance with existing ones.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said that Republicans in Congress are preparing a bill on very tough sanctions against countries that continue to do business with Russia . According to him, the document may also include provisions on Iran.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram .

US President Donald Trump has announced his willingness to approve a legislative initiative to impose sanctions against Russia, but on the condition that the final decision on their application will remain with him personally.
