After that, Chinese state-owned corporations effectively froze purchases of Russian oil, and India — which until recently was one of the key buyers — did not submit new orders for December.

Thomas O’Donnell, an energy analyst in Berlin, believes that the combination of US sanctions and Ukraine’s systematic attacks on Russian oil refineries could radically weaken the Kremlin. In his opinion, the attack on infrastructure, combined with severe trade restrictions, creates a “double squeeze” effect that could sharply reduce Russia’s revenues.

The expert emphasizes that Russia is now effectively dependent on only two major buyers — China and India. Moscow is unlikely to find new customers: most countries fear secondary US sanctions.

According to US media, the Trump team is considering expanding the sanctions package on Iran. A bill being prepared in Congress, supported by Senator Lindsey Graham, could impose tariffs of up to 500% on countries that continue to import Russian energy.

First of all, such measures will hit China and India, the largest consumers of Russian oil.

Ukraine has been actively disabling Russian oil and port facilities in recent months. Damage to terminals in Novorossiysk and Tuapse has already affected part of global supplies. Analysts predict that the Baltics could be the next risk zone — and this will cause losses to Russia that will amplify the effects of sanctions.

Observers agree that the tough sanctions policy is Trump’s attempt to force Putin to negotiate from a weakened position. The reduction in oil revenues will make it impossible for the Kremlin to maintain large-scale military spending.

Alex Adamo of The Commercialiser suggests that Trump’s next step could be to pressure the EU to review its energy relations and reduce imports of Russian resources as much as possible.

Recall, last week the price of Russian Urals oil fell to $36 per barrel, setting the lowest level in the last 2.5 years . The fall occurred on the eve of the entry into force of new US sanctions against two of Russia’s largest oil companies.

By the way, Turkey’s largest oil refineries have started buying more non-Russian oil after the latest sanctions against Russia by the United States, the European Union and the United Kingdom . The new restrictions have affected the energy policy of Ankara, which is one of the key buyers of Russian raw materials.

As previously reported, expanded sanctions restrictions targeting Chinese ports and refineries are significantly slowing the flow of Russian and Iranian oil to China, the world’s largest consumer of “black gold.” At the same time, the emergence of new schemes to circumvent these restrictions suggests that the current drop in supplies may be short-lived.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram .

US President Donald Trump has warned that any state that does not cut economic ties with Russia will face the toughest sanctions possible.
