For the first time since the start of the full-scale war, Ukraine has handed over to another state a detained Russian serviceman suspected of war crimes. This is Margen Gadzhimagomedov, a military police inspector of the 177th Marine Regiment of the Russian Federation who tortured prisoners in Melitopol.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Among the man’s victims was a Lithuanian volunteer who had been helping Ukraine since the first days of the war.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the investigation, the Russian tortured people in a prison on the territory of the occupied airfield. The prisoners were kept in safes, strangled, hung by the hands, doused with ice water in the cold and electrocuted. The Ukrainian military took him prisoner during the fighting near Robotyne in August 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following a joint investigation by the SBU, the Prosecutor General’s Office, and the National Police, Lithuania charged Hadzhimagomedov with violating the Geneva Conventions and the laws of war. The Vilnius City Court issued an extradition order, and Ukraine transferred the suspect to Lithuania in late October.<\/span><\/p>\n

Deputy Head of the SBU Serhiy Naumyuk stressed that this is the first such case since the Russian invasion. And Deputy Prosecutor General of Lithuania Gintas Ivanauskas thanked his Ukrainian colleagues and reminded that in Lithuania such crimes can be punished with 10-20 years in prison or life imprisonment.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was previously reported that the Security Service of Ukraine prevented a series of terrorist attacks in Kyiv that were being prepared by a resident of the Russian FSB.<\/a><\/p>\n

As a reminder, the European Union has imposed sanctions against ten Russians involved in the torture of civilian hostages and the persecution of the opposition.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n
