German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron have said they do not support Russia’s return to the G8 format. There is no willingness among the G7 countries to make such a decision.<\/strong><\/p>\n

During a press conference on November 23 after the G20 summit in Johannesburg, Friedrich Merz commented on the initial version of the US peace plan, which envisages the possible return of Russia to the G8. The Chancellor stressed that such a proposal does not receive support among European partners.<\/p>\n

“I don’t see any willingness among the six current G7 members that aren’t America to readmit Russia to this group,” Merz said.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that the restoration of the G8 format is possible only with the unanimous position of all members of the association.<\/p>\n

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron voiced a similar position. According to him, the country has no reason to support Russia’s return to the G8.<\/p>\n

The article recalls that Russia was expelled from the G8 in June 2014 after the occupation of Crimea. The planned summit in Sochi was canceled, and the leaders of other states refused to participate in the event.<\/p>\n
