A massive fire has engulfed several buildings in a large apartment complex in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district, killing at least 128 people and injuring dozens, with the death toll expected to rise.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A massive fire broke out in the Wang Fuk Court apartment complex and spread to several buildings before firefighters were able to bring the flames under control. It took about 42 hours to extinguish the fire.<\/p>\n

At least 128 people<\/strong> have been killed and 79 injured<\/strong> as of Friday, according to Hong Kong’s Security Secretary Chris Tang. The official added that the death toll could rise as about 200 people are still missing<\/strong> or unaccounted for.<\/p>\n

“This number could increase as some bodies have not yet been identified,” said Chris Tang.<\/p>\n

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Police are conducting an investigation that is expected to last 3-4 weeks. Investigators are trying to determine why the fire spread so quickly from one building to others and turned into simultaneous multi-story fires.<\/p>\n

According to preliminary information, the fire broke out on the lower floors of the Wang Cheong Building (Block 6), which is part of a complex of 8 densely located towers, which housed more than 4,000 people, a significant number of whom were elderly residents.<\/p>\n

At the time of the fire, renovation work was underway throughout the complex. All the buildings were covered with bamboo scaffolding and green protective netting. Earlier, police found the name of the construction company on flammable polystyrene boards that had been used to cover some of the windows.<\/p>\n

“The flames caught the protective nets and quickly spread to the polystyrene boards, which caused fires on other floors and in neighboring houses. After the polystyrene ignited, the high temperature led to the destruction of windows, and the fire spread inside the premises,” said Chris Tang. <\/p>\n
