MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak said that the pressure on investigative journalist Yuriy Nikolov was organized by political strategist Volodymyr Petrov. According to the MP, the incident may be related to Nikolov’s materials about corrupt procurements at the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is noted that on January 14, 2024, unknown persons tried to break<\/a> into Yuriy Nikolov’s apartment. The attackers shouted that the journalist should “go to serve” and pasted insulting inscriptions on the door, calling him a “traitor”. This happened after a series of materials by Nikolov about the purchases of the Ministry of Defense, in particular eggs for 17 hryvnias.<\/p>\n

After the incident became public, President Volodymyr Zelensky declared<\/a> that pressure on journalists was unacceptable, and the police announced<\/a> that the perpetrators of the attack had been identified. However, according to Zheleznyak, none of the perpetrators were punished, the person who ordered the attack was not identified, and the case was reclassified to a milder article.<\/p>\n

Yuriy Nikolov noted that during the investigative actions, Volodymyr Petrov was also interrogated, but he denied involvement. Then the investigative actions effectively stopped.<\/p>\n

Zheleznyak’s team analyzed<\/a> the correspondence of the perpetrators and identified the organizer of the pressure. The correspondence mentioned a customer named Volodymyr with the nickname Egersund in Telegram. Using the user’s digital code, investigators accessed an account that later changed its name, but moderated the chat of one of Petrov’s channels, DOSH.<\/p>\n

The nickname change to Birmasan occurred in late January 2024, when law enforcement officers were questioning the suspects and conducting searches. According to Zheleznyak, the money was transferred to the perpetrators near the studio office of the Iceland TV channel, whose host is Petrov. The description of the person one of the suspects met with matches Petrov’s appearance.<\/p>\n

“Although I do not have direct evidence, I assume that the Office of the President is behind the threats and pressure on the investigative journalist organized by Petrov,” said Yaroslav Zheleznyak.<\/p>\n

The investigation also states that the first videos of the attack on Nikolov’s apartment were published by the Telegram channel “Card Office”, whose owner is believed to be Petrov.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that a sensational turn took place in the case of the attack on the home of investigative journalist Yuriy Nikolov<\/a> . As reported by the publication “Dzerkalo Tyzhnia”, two guys contacted the editorial office of the website “Zhitomir.city” and said that they were the ones hired to carry out a provocation at the home of investigative journalist Yuriy Nikolov, and that the SBU and the police were allegedly involved in this story. Nikolov himself wrote about this on Facebook.<\/p>\n

By the way, law enforcement officers did not detain the attackers who tried to break into the apartment of journalist Yuriy Nikolov.<\/a> Moreover, these individuals were not even informed of the suspicion.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, law enforcement agencies have opened criminal proceedings for obstructing the professional activities of Yuriy Nikolov, a journalist<\/a> from the “Our Money” project.<\/p>\n

Earlier, journalist Yuriy Nikolov, whose apartment was attacked by unknown assailants, said that the Office of the President is attacking the media<\/a> , and emphasized that this silence from the Office of the President indicates support for such actions. Nikolov called for support for journalists and expressed his belief that in democracies, journalists always win.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, law enforcement officers established<\/a> that the attackers who tried to break into the apartment of investigative journalist Yuriy Nikolov on January 14 were residents of Kyiv, Zhytomyr, and Cherkasy regions.<\/p>\n

According to the SBU, transparent and unhindered work of independent and professional media is an important condition for the development of Ukraine as a democratic state. Such facts of surveillance should be given a legal assessment, regardless of whether or not the hidden filming materials revealed facts of possible violation of the law related to the circulation of narcotic substances.<\/p>\n
