As the New Year holidays approach, Ukrainians are looking for alternatives to the traditional Christmas tree to decorate their homes, including potted plants. Such plants can survive the holidays and decorate a garden or balcony, providing a long-lasting decorative effect.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Among the popular alternatives to the traditional fir tree, experts highlight the Araucaria variegata, dwarf fir, lemon cypress, and Italian pine. Potted plants can live longer than cut Christmas trees if properly cared for.<\/p>\n

Araucaria multifoliata is native to the southern Pacific Ocean. In nature, the tree can reach 60 meters, but in an apartment it usually grows to 1.8 – 2.7 meters. The plant needs bright light and moderate watering. <\/p>\n

Dwarf spruce was discovered in Canada in the early 20th century and retains its natural conical shape without pruning. It can be kept indoors for about a month, after which it can be gradually accustomed to the street for further growth. <\/p>\n

Lemon cypress is native to California and has a strong aroma and decorative needle color. The tree requires a lot of light and watering and is usually used as a seasonal plant. <\/p>\n

The Italian pine (Pinea spp.) is native to the Mediterranean and is becoming popular as a compact potted Christmas tree. Young trees have a dense form and a pleasant blue-gray shade of needles. They require plenty of light and moderate watering, and can eventually reach 12 to 18 meters. <\/p>\n

According to House Beautiful, cut Christmas trees stay fresh for about 4-5 weeks<\/strong> . Potted plants, with proper care, can be decorative all year round<\/strong> , although in a heated apartment it is recommended to keep them for no longer than 2-3 weeks.<\/p>\n

We would like to remind you that preparations for the winter holidays are underway in the center of Kyiv<\/a> , and this year the main Christmas tree in the capital will have an unusual, historically inspired look. The decor for it is made in soft pastel shades, repeating the color scheme of the frescoes of St. Sophia of Kyiv.<\/p>\n
