Four men have been arrested in South Africa, who were heading to Russia to become mercenaries in the war against Ukraine. They were detained at Johannesburg airport and are being investigated for the scale of an organized recruitment scheme.<\/strong><\/p>\n

South African police have arrested four men at O. R. Tambo International Airport near Johannesburg. They were removed from a flight to the United Arab Emirates, from where they were due to fly on to Russia.<\/p>\n

According to the investigation, the trip was organized and recruited by an unnamed South African woman. Police are also looking for two other people involved in the scheme.<\/p>\n

The detainees are suspected of violating South African law, which prohibits working as mercenaries.<\/p>\n

The SABC reported that a prominent media personality was among those arrested, but his name was not disclosed. The detainees are due to appear in court on December 1.<\/p>\n

The police noted that they are investigating the scope of the recruitment network in coordination with intelligence and foreign partners.<\/p>\n

The arrests came a week after a Bloomberg investigation into a group of 20 young men from South Africa and Botswana who were tricked into fighting for Russia against Ukraine.<\/p>\n

They were promised training to become bodyguards for the political party of former President Jacob Zuma, but upon arrival in Russia, they were forced to sign a contract with the Russian army.<\/p>\n

As reported, the Kremlin is actively recruiting residents of the Middle East to participate in the war against Ukraine<\/a> , in particular, the Russian Federation is conducting large-scale campaigns together with Iran.<\/p>\n
