In Ukraine, the use of the name \u201ccognac\u201d for alcoholic beverages produced outside the Cognac region in France will be prohibited from January 1, 2026. Instead of this name, the label \u201cbrandy\u201d will appear on store shelves.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This innovation is provided for by the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union. The name \u201ccognac\u201d has a geographical meaning and is associated with a specific region in France, therefore in other countries a similar drink should be labeled as \u201cbrandy\u201d.<\/p>\n

Not all manufacturers were prepared for the name change. Some entrepreneurs reported that they did not have time to prepare for the rebranding due to the war. According to the companies, they have limited financial resources to replace labels and launch new information campaigns.<\/p>\n

“This year, our company suffered significant losses due to the war. As a result of the attack, a workshop and warehouse worth 10 million euros were destroyed,” the Akkerman Distillery reported.<\/p>\n

According to preliminary forecasts, after changing the name from \u201ccognac\u201d to \u201cbrandy,\u201d sales of the drink in Ukraine may decrease by 25\u201330 percent. At the same time, rebranding will require additional costs of 500,000 to 600,000 euros for each company.<\/p>\n

Industry associations and individual manufacturers have asked the government to postpone the implementation of the new requirements for 10 years. The Ministry of Economy noted that fulfilling this obligation to the European Union is mandatory.<\/p>\n

Producers who do not change the labeling will face fines ranging from 43,235 to 129,705 hryvnias for each violation. Stores will be able to sell existing stocks of the drink called \u201ccognac\u201d until the end of 2026.<\/p>\n

There are no separate fines for stores selling such a drink. However, such labeling may be considered a violation of consumer rights, which entails a fine of up to 850 hryvnias.<\/p>\n
