On the evening of December 1, a peaceful protest in Sofia against Bulgaria’s draft budget for 2026, which includes tax increases, turned into riots.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Reuters reports<\/a> this.<\/p>\n

Around 10:00 PM, in the area of the office of the “DPS – New Beginning” party, some young participants began to set fire to garbage cans and attack a police minibus. Law enforcement officers used tear gas to suppress the riots.<\/p>\n

As a result of the incident, two police officers were injured and several people were detained for hooliganism. The party “Continuing Changes – Democratic Bulgaria”, which organized the rally, demanded the resignation of the Minister of Internal Affairs due to the inadequate protection of the rally and the success of the provocateurs.<\/p>\n

Amid the unrest, pro-Russian President Rumen Radev called on the government to resign and call early elections.<\/p>\n

Protesters opposed controversial provisions of the draft budget, including new taxes on dividends and increases in social security rates.<\/p>\n

This budget will be Bulgaria’s first to be calculated in euros, as the country switches to the single currency on January 1, 2026. About half of the population does not support abandoning the lev due to fears of rising prices.<\/p>\n
