During this period, calendars are full of red dates that indicate significant days. Among them, the holiday of St. Nicholas, which children eagerly await, holds a special place.

The Soviet government banned all Christmas symbols for many years, including Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. However, now this day is deeply rooted in culture, family traditions, and children’s perception of the world. For Ukrainians, it is a time of wonder.

The story of Saint Nicholas

According to ancient traditions, Nicholas was born in the third century AD in the city of Patara on the Lycian peninsula. The exact date has not been preserved, but it is known that it was between 270 and 286.

The boy was born into a wealthy, religious family. He was the only son of his parents, so they raised him in a caring and religious atmosphere and even baptized him, which was a rarity at the time.

Nicholas was distinguished by piety, was generous, took care of the elderly and needy. Shortly after reaching adulthood, his parents died, and he was left an orphan. The boy inherited all the wealth and, without waiting for requests, distributed his property to people in need – secretly brought food, clothes, toys to the poor. When the inhabitants of the city found out who was doing good deeds, they elected Nicholas bishop.

During his life, he did many good deeds: he helped people who were starving, prayed for them, freed prisoners. Moreover, there is a story about Nicholas resurrecting three murdered children, which is why he is often depicted on icons with babies.

Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker ended his earthly journey in the city of Myra on December 6, approximately between 345 and 352. His relics were solemnly buried in one of the city’s churches, where they were venerated and rested until 1087.

When did they start honoring Saint Nicholas?

As early as the 6th century, Christians began to honor the memory of Nicholas as a saint, when his relics were transferred to the city of Bari. In Ukraine, this tradition appeared a little later: its roots go back to the times of Rus’ – as early as 882, there was a church dedicated to Nicholas the Wonderworker in Kyiv.

The image of the saint was held in great esteem among sailors, including the Cossacks. They considered him their patron saint, so a small icon was an obligatory attribute on Cossack ships.

Nicholas the Wonderworker was also revered in Medieval Europe. Some researchers believe that the tradition of giving gifts on this holiday originated in Germany, where parents presented clothes to their children. Later, this began to be done secretly so that the little ones would believe in miracles. Over time, this tradition spread around the world and gained immense popularity.

However, in the 20th century, after the rise of the Soviet Union, the authorities tried to replace Christmas with New Year. As a result, the image of Saint Nicholas was repressed, and Santa Claus was imposed as a replacement. Despite this, Ukrainian youth continued to secretly celebrate the cycle of winter holidays, including Saint Nicholas Day.

Why did the date of the celebration of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker’s Day change in Ukraine?

Most Christians in the world, including European countries, celebrate winter holidays in the “new” style. Ukraine joined them in 2023.

On September 1, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) switched to the new Julian church calendar. This means that all calendar holidays have been moved back 13 days.

Therefore, for the third year in a row, Ukrainian children will receive gifts not on December 19, but on December 6.

Traditions for St. Nicholas Day

On the eve of the holiday, it is customary for children to write letters to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, in which they indicate their requests and wishes. They often add drawings to them or tell about their good deeds, because they believe that the Saint will definitely read them and fulfill their most sincere dreams.

On the night of December 6, parents would quietly place gifts under the pillow or, in some regions, in the shoes, imitating the good deeds of the patron saint. If the child was obedient, they would definitely receive the desired item, however, if they were naughty during the year, they would find a sharp object in the morning.

On this day, parents, instilling in their children a love of good deeds, could collect gifts for orphans and low-income families, visit hospitals, and hold events to support those in need.

Also, on the feast of St. Nicholas, Christians visit the temple, where they pray for the health of their relatives and ask for protection and care for the family.

Among other things, it is considered a good tradition to bake holiday cookies, which are symbolically called “Nikolaychiky”.

In general, St. Nicholas Day is a time of miracles, especially for those who believe in miracles, regardless of age. This holiday reminds us that kindness always comes back, and sincerity and care make our world warmer.

Based on materials from the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of St. Father Nicholas , ” Suspilny “, ” Espresso “, ” RBK-Ukraine “.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram.

Ukrainian history and culture are rich in various winter holidays.
