Twice they failed. In the winter of 2022\u201323 and again in the summer of 2024, Ukrainian energy workers held the system together, producing what seemed like miracles. But we know there are no miracles \u2014 only relentless, disciplined work carried out at the edge of human capability.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"66\" data-end=\"405\">And those \u201cmiracles\u201d quickly became something people just expected. Many assumed this was normal \u2014 that it had to be this way and could not be otherwise. But it could. And it absolutely could have been worse. The only reason it wasn\u2019t is the skill and relentless work of energy crews, supported on a massive scale by the civilized world.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"407\" data-end=\"463\">Yet now Ukrainians demand miracles again. Real miracles.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"465\" data-end=\"763\">And we keep hearing: <em data-start=\"486\" data-end=\"763\">A whole week has passed since the last shelling \u2014 why are the outages still so severe? Is someone slacking off? Has the money been stolen again? They\u2019re probably exporting electricity abroad. Who is cutting off my line on purpose? Is this revenge because I \u201cspoke the truth\u201d?<\/em><\/p>\n\t\t<aside class=\"shortcode-also\" data-title=\"Read also\" >\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/prm.ua\/en\/energy-shortages-are-intensifying-critical-infrastructure-is-being-transferred-to-backup-power\/\">Energy shortages are intensifying: critical infrastructure is being transferred to backup power<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\n<p data-start=\"132\" data-end=\"242\">Indeed, why wasn\u2019t a thermal power plant rebuilt in a week after being hit by a barrage of ballistic missiles\u2026<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"244\" data-end=\"467\">Miracles do not happen. And we need to accept this as winter begins. No matter how hard Ukrainian energy workers push themselves, the system\u2019s safety margin is shrinking. The stock of equipment for repairs is not limitless.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"469\" data-end=\"804\">The last thing we can afford is to blame the people who are working to exhaustion to restore the grid after Russia\u2019s barbaric attacks. Few things are more ignorant than claiming that someone is being disconnected \u201cbecause of a conspiracy\u201d or due to \u201cincompetence,\u201d as if the entire problem could be solved by someone flipping a switch.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"806\" data-end=\"1312\">And no, there <em data-start=\"819\" data-end=\"823\">is<\/em> something worse. The Instagram prophets have crawled out again, suddenly reinvented as energy experts with pots on their heads. The astrologers, numerologists and tarot readers have paused their \u201csuccessful success\u201d coaching and anti-vaccine crusades. Now they call for capitulation and try to pin the blackouts on Ukraine itself. Myths about electricity exports are back, although by the fourth year of full-scale war, one might expect people to grasp the link: shelling causes outages.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1314\" data-end=\"1436\">In winter 2022, the export conspiracy theories were almost funny. Now they make you want to turn off the sound altogether.<\/p>\n\t\t<aside class=\"shortcode-also\" data-title=\"Read also\" data-right>\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/prm.ua\/en\/residents-of-kyiv-region-organized-a-protest-due-to-power-outages\/\">Residents of Kyiv region organized a protest due to power outages<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\n<p data-start=\"113\" data-end=\"429\">The last time we saw such a wave of girls throwing public tantrums and begging to \u201cmeet the Russians\u201d was in the summer of 2024, after the attack on Ohmatdyt. For some reason, this is exactly the audience the Russians manage to inspire, trying to stir up internal pressure\u201d against the backdrop of external aggression.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"431\" data-end=\"498\">But we have no reason to play along with them or fulfill their plan.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"500\" data-end=\"752\">This winter will bring many long hours of darkness. And with this darkness, the Russians will attempt to foment internal pressure.
