There are currently no bills or drafts in Ukraine that would regulate the holding of elections during wartime. However, the Verkhovna Rada is ready to prepare all necessary documents to ensure a democratic process even during hostilities.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was stated by the Vice Speaker of the Parliament, Oleksandr Kornienko, on the air of a national telethon.<\/p>\n

“We are ready to develop legislation for holding elections during the war. This requires a broad discussion with the government and civil society organizations. We need to sit down together and discuss how to move forward,” Kornienko explained.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that the current six-year term of the Rada is unprecedented, but the delay in the elections is due not to political will, but to war and daily threats from Russia, including missile strikes and drones.<\/p>\n

“The elections are being postponed because of the war, not because of a lack of democracy. Ukraine remains a candidate for EU membership and must meet democratic criteria. To hold the vote, a clear security framework is needed, which our partners – the US and the EU – must provide,” he noted.<\/p>\n

Kornienko named the key risks of holding elections during the war:<\/p>\n

the safety of voters abroad who cannot return due to shelling;<\/p>\n

the participation of the military at the front and their running for office;<\/p>\n

problems with the voter register and the need to expand the powers of the CEC;<\/p>\n

security of polling stations in frontline areas;<\/p>\n

threats from modern FPV drones capable of striking from tens of kilometers away.<\/p>\n

According to him, the parliament and the CEC already have technical developments: seven working groups are working, there are draft laws, but not a single document is ready for consideration in the session hall yet, in order to avoid political conflict.<\/p>\n

Kornienko emphasized that international partners who insist on holding elections must first and foremost ensure the safety of Ukrainian citizens.<\/p>\n

Holding early presidential and parliamentary elections in Ukraine during the war is theoretically possible, but the key issue now remains the issue of guaranteeing the safety of citizens. The next local elections, scheduled for October 26, did not take place due to martial law.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, US President Donald Trump said that, in his opinion, it is time for Ukraine to hold presidential elections. He said this in an interview at the White House.<\/a><\/p>\n

Subsequently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he was ready to hold elections after US President Donald Trump said that they needed to be held.<\/a><\/p>\n
