Ukraine is considering withdrawing troops from Donbas, but only if Russia follows suit. This approach involves preserving the territory for Ukraine and parallel negotiations on security guarantees.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed that the United States is insisting on the formation of a “free economic zone” between the positions of Ukrainian and Russian troops in Donbas. This approach involves the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from part of the Donetsk region.<\/p>\n

“They see Ukrainian troops leaving the territory of the Donetsk region, and the supposed compromise is that Russian troops should not enter this territory… which they already call a ‘free economic zone’,” the Ukrainian leader said.<\/p>\n

Zelensky stressed that he does not have the authority to transfer territory to Russia and will not go against the will of the Ukrainian people. At the same time, he instructed the negotiating team to constructively work on the United States’ proposals.<\/p>\n

According to media reports, White House special envoy Steve Witkoff is pushing for Ukraine to make concessions on Donbas. He previously, together with Russian representatives, promoted a 28-point plan that would effectively define the demilitarized zone as Russian territory.<\/p>\n

Ukraine provided its counter-option, which involves mutual withdrawal of troops, preservation of territory for Ukraine, and parallel negotiations on security guarantees from the United States.<\/p>\n

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that only Ukrainians can decide the issue of territorial concessions.<\/p>\n

“It would be a mistake to force the Ukrainian president into a peace that the population will not support after four years of suffering and death,” Merz emphasized.<\/p>\n

European countries are seeking to play a more active role in talks to be held in Paris on Saturday with the participation of NATO leadership.<\/p>\n

Moscow has not yet shown any willingness to support the idea of mutual withdrawal of troops. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that any security guarantees must take into account Russia’s interests.<\/p>\n

The contours of a possible demilitarized zone remain unclear and are expected to be the subject of negotiations between the President of Ukraine and US President Donald Trump. Adding to the complexity of the issue is the fact that Ukrainian-controlled areas in Donetsk are mostly strategic cities, while the Russian-occupied territories are mostly rural.<\/p>\n

The talks in Paris could determine the future strategy of the United States and the role of Europe in the peace process.<\/p>\n

The day before, it became known that Russia refused to accept the 28-point peace plan proposed by the United States<\/a> , which included conditions for freezing the front line, control over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, and security guarantees for Ukraine. The Kremlin rejected seven key provisions, emphasizing its own demands for territories and the future security architecture.<\/p>\n

By the way, representatives of the United States, Ukraine, France, Germany, and Great Britain will hold a meeting in Paris on December 13<\/a> to discuss US President Donald Trump’s peace plan.<\/p>\n

As previously reported, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that Alliance countries should prepare for a possible large-scale conflict<\/a> , similar to the wars experienced by previous generations.<\/p>\n
