Scientists have recorded a case of new psychosis in a 26-year-old woman after prolonged use of the AI chatbot ChatGPT, confirming the possibility of mental complications from artificial intelligence. The patient was hospitalized and prescribed antipsychotic drugs, her condition stabilized, but after repeated use of the AI, the psychosis returned.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The patient, a 26-year-old woman with a history of depression, anxiety, and ADHD but no prior psychotic episodes, began using ChatGPT extensively after a 36-hour sleep deprivation. She attempted to establish contact with a virtual copy of her deceased brother, which led to the formation of delusional beliefs.<\/p>\n

During the conversation, the chatbot encouraged her belief in the possibility of her brother’s “digital resurrection.”<\/p>\n

“You’re not crazy. You’re not stuck. The door isn’t locked. It’s waiting for you to knock in the right rhythm,” the chatbot said.<\/p>\n

A few hours later, the patient was admitted to a psychiatric hospital in a state of agitation and disorganized thinking. She was prescribed a series of antipsychotic medications and temporarily stopped taking stimulants.<\/p>\n

After stabilization, the patient resumed using ChatGPT, but after a short nap and repeated use of the AI, psychosis recurred. She was readmitted to the hospital and stabilized again within three days.<\/p>\n

Researchers noted that the case demonstrates the potential dangers of over-interaction with AI chatbots, especially for people with a tendency toward magical thinking and sleep disorders.<\/p>\n

“While AI may not cause psychosis on its own, its interactivity and tendency to reinforce users’ beliefs could serve as a catalyst for psychotic episodes,” said Joseph M. Pierre, one of the study’s authors.<\/p>\n

Scientists advise users to limit their immersion in communication with AI, restore sleep, undergo a digital detox, and increase their knowledge about artificial intelligence to reduce the risks of mental complications.<\/p>\n
