Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said he had asked Russian President Vladimir Putin what Moscow would do if the European Union decided to use frozen Russian assets. Orban said he heard in response that Budapest’s position on the issue would be “taken into account” in Russia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The head of the Hungarian government said<\/a> this during a flight to Brussels, Mandiner reports.<\/p>\n

Orban noted that in his letter to Putin, he was interested not only in Russia’s possible response to the EU initiative to use assets to finance aid to Ukraine, but also in whether Moscow would take into account the positions of individual member states of the bloc.<\/p>\n

According to the Hungarian Prime Minister, the Russian side stated that the reaction to such an EU decision “will be strong.”<\/p>\n

Orban reiterated that Hungary does not support the idea of using frozen Russian assets, calling it a step towards further escalation. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the actions of the European Union in the sanctions discussions, saying that, in his opinion, Brussels has violated the principle of loyal cooperation towards Hungary.<\/p>\n

Separately, Orban published a post on the social network X, where he wrote that he no longer considers the EU position to be binding on Budapest on this issue. At the same time, according to Mandiner, the prime minister joked that what he likes most about Brussels is chocolate, the city’s central square, and… the opportunity to leave as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, the European Union countries are considering the possibility of an expedited decision to indefinitely freeze Russian assets worth 210 billion euros.<\/a><\/p>\n

As reported, the European Union has decided to freeze the assets of the Central Bank of Russia stored in Europe for an indefinite period.<\/a><\/p>\n

Subsequently, the Russian Central Bank filed a lawsuit in a Moscow court regarding the \u201cillegal actions\u201d of the Belgian depository Euroclear, which holds the frozen assets.<\/a><\/p>\n
