On Thursday, December 18, the European Union will decide how to provide financial support to Ukraine for the coming years so that the country can continue to resist Russian aggression. Without EU help, Ukraine’s reserves will run out in the second quarter of 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The agency notes that one of the main financing options is to use frozen Russian assets. However, a final decision on this mechanism has not yet been made.<\/p>\n

European leaders view the war in Ukraine not only as a humanitarian issue but also as a direct challenge to EU security, and are therefore interested in continuing financial support for Kyiv. At the same time, this step should demonstrate Europe’s determination and strength after criticism from US President Donald Trump, who called European leaders “weak.”<\/p>\n

In particular, the EU is exploring the possibility of using around \u20ac210 billion in assets held by the Russian Central Bank as the basis for a loan to Ukraine. “The stakes are extremely high: without EU assistance, Ukraine risks running out of financial resources in the second quarter of 2026, which could accelerate its defeat in a war with Russia and, according to Europeans, bring the threat of Russian aggression against the bloc closer,” the publication notes.<\/p>\n

Recall that diplomats of the European Union countries have reached a preliminary agreement on using frozen Russian assets to provide Ukraine with a so-called \u201creparations loan\u201d in 2026\u20132027<\/a> . The final decision is to be made by EU leaders during a meeting of the European Council.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the European Union decided to freeze the assets of the Central Bank of Russia stored in Europe for an indefinite period.<\/a><\/p>\n

As reported, British banks have opposed the transfer of frozen Russian assets worth more than \u00a38 billion (about $10.6 billion) to Ukraine<\/a> , warning of serious legal risks and possible lawsuits from Russia.<\/p>\n

By the way, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that he had asked Russian President Vladimir Putin what Moscow’s reaction would be if the European Union decided to use frozen Russian assets<\/a> . According to Orban, he heard in response that Budapest’s position on this issue would be “taken into account” in Russia.<\/p>\n
