The bulk of Belarusian exports go to the Russian market. About a quarter of the products are also supplied to third countries, but through Russian ports, railways and logistics infrastructure. Russia controls tariffs and routes, which makes up to 90% of Belarusian exports critically dependent on Russia.

Financial integration has also deepened dramatically. After sanctions against the Belarusian banking sector and the disconnection of four state-owned banks from the SWIFT system, Minsk completely switched to Russian payment mechanisms. Half of the currency basket of the National Bank of Belarus now consists of the Russian ruble, and any fluctuations in the Russian economy immediately affect the Belarusian currency exchange rate.

Investment dependence has a similar dynamic. The share of Russian capital in foreign direct investment has increased to almost 70%. In fact, Russia remains the only available source of external financing for Minsk.

Belarus’s national debt to Russia has reached approximately $8 billion. Moscow has agreed to restructure payments over seven years, further tightening its political and economic control over the country.

A separate direction has been the integration of the defense industry. After the start of the full-scale war against Ukraine, Minsk intensified production cooperation with the Russian military-industrial complex. At least 300 Belarusian state-owned enterprises have been reoriented to fulfill contracts with the Russian military-industrial complex.

As a result, Belarus has effectively lost its economic room for maneuver, and key strategic decisions are made in accordance with the Kremlin’s political and economic interests.

It was previously reported that the Russian Oreshnik missile system went on combat duty in Belarus.

As a reminder, Russia has deployed up to 350-360 thousand combat-ready military personnel on the territory of Belarus who are not involved in the war against Ukraine.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram.

Russia has dramatically increased its economic influence on Belarus, drawing it into deep dependence in almost all key sectors – from logistics and finance to investment and the defense industry.
