The fifth President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko,<\/span> explained in an interview with journalist Vitaly Portnikov that there are only three types of effective security guarantees.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by the press service of “European Solidarity”<\/a> .<\/p>\n

“We need to stop talking about the fact that we are conducting intense negotiations on security guarantees. You have been conducting them for seven years. The last four years have been especially active. You have signed 40 security agreements. Why aren’t you using them now? Where are your security guarantees that you were proud of, waving pieces of paper and saying, now we have all the security guarantees? Because these are not security guarantees,” Poroshenko stated.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that there are three types of security guarantees<\/strong> .<\/p>\n

Guarantee one \u2013 full membership in NATO<\/strong><\/h3>\n

“I am proud that I made NATO membership mandatory in the Constitution. Imagine if we didn’t have these constitutional norms now. No matter how easily the negotiating team refused, it was ready to make changes to the legislation. There is no other alternative to reliable security. And that is why I am finally happy that I heard from Zelenskyy, because there has been a strange transformation from 2019, when “why do we need NATO” and “I refuse to go to the NATO summit in London, because I have nothing to do there” to now “we will not change the Constitution regarding Ukraine’s future membership in NATO.” Why? Because this is the only form (of security guarantees),” Poroshenko emphasized.<\/p>\n

The guarantee of a friend – a strategic defense partnership<\/strong><\/h3>\n

“Second position. Two countries have these security formats – Japan and South Korea. This is an agreement on strategic defense partnership. Do you know what its main characteristic is? This means that units of the United States armed forces are located on the territory of Japan and South Korea. And this is an effective form outside NATO,” Poroshenko reminded.<\/p>\n

When asked about Donald Trump’s opposition to Ukraine’s membership in NATO, Poroshenko recalled how he conducted negotiations in Washington during Trump’s first term.<\/p>\n

“2016. Trump is elected president. In 2016, I was one of the first to congratulate Trump, with whom he had telephone conversations. 2017 – I was one of the first in the White House. The results of my negotiations in 2017 – what I could not get three years before. Lethal weapons. And now I can tell you that there were far from only “Javelins”. For the first time, we received them directly, and not through the CIA, intelligence. For the first time, we received the re-equipment of counter-battery stations and much more. This is the merit not only of Mattis (?), as the Minister of Defense, not only of the Secretary of State – this is the merit of Trump. And we decided it in two hours,” Poroshenko said.<\/p>\n

He added that Trump is a person who doesn’t read briefings.<\/p>\n

“Trump is a person with whom you can negotiate anything. Form a negotiating team. You don’t have anyone to communicate with the White House through right now,” Poroshenko noted.<\/p>\n

Guarantee three – Article 5 of NATO before official accession<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The third option for security guarantees is the option of Sweden and Finland, when the guarantees of NATO’s Article 5 were extended to them before official accession, the fifth President recalled.<\/p>\n

“Remember, then Turkey blocked, then Hungary blocked, then there were some other positions on Sweden, and this was on Finland. And then NATO made a decision. This means when we will receive a 100% security guarantee for the period before accession,” Poroshenko said.<\/p>\n

He also noted that the main component of such guarantees is the so-called “boots on the ground”, that is, the military contingents of the allies on the territory of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

“Boots on the ground. The Americans are now refusing – then we should have military units and contingents from Great Britain, France and eleven other countries that have agreed to send their military contingents to ensure the security of the achieved process,” Poroshenko explained.<\/p>\n

The fifth president emphasized that this is not an easy task, but the survival and existence of our state, as well as the form in which it will be preserved, depends on it.<\/p>\n

“What is being signed now is not about security. It is not about defense. Do you know what these guarantees are about? They are about arms supplies and financial assistance. There is nothing else there. This is the fourth form – what the authorities have been doing for four years. They are not legally binding. They have not been ratified by parliament. And they are even worse than the Budapest Memorandum. In order to understand this, a professional, competent, calm approach is needed. And, unfortunately, this is the approach that the authorities lack,” Petro Poroshenko summed up.<\/p>\n

By the way, the United States and European countries have prepared a joint plan of security guarantees for Ukraine<\/a> , which should consolidate a possible peace agreement with Russia and prevent new aggression. The document provides for a multi-level deterrence system and clear commitments from Washington.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It was previously reported that US President Donald Trump is convinced that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin does not seek peace and ultimately intends to seize all of Ukraine.<\/a><\/p>\n

Recall, the day before yesterday, the Kremlin stated that Russia allegedly seeks not a temporary truce, but “full-fledged peace”, while rejecting the idea of a Christmas ceasefire.<\/a><\/p>\n
