Two NATO intelligence agencies believe Russia is developing an anti-satellite weapon capable of disabling Starlink satellites with a debris cloud.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Associated Press reports this, citing intelligence data.<\/p>\n

This refers to the so-called “area-based weapon,” which allegedly involves filling Starlink orbits with hundreds of thousands of high-density pellets. This would, according to the plan, simultaneously damage or destroy a significant number of satellites and limit the West’s space advantage, which is used, in particular, to support Ukraine.<\/p>\n

According to the AP, the pellets could be very small\u2014just a few millimeters in diameter\u2014making them difficult to detect by ground-based and space-based surveillance systems. This would also complicate the attribution of Moscow to a possible attack.<\/p>\n

The intelligence does not specify the current stage of development of such a system, whether it has been tested, or when it might be deployed. However, analysts warn that the use of such weapons could lead to uncontrolled chaos in space and pose a threat to the satellites of many countries and companies, including Russia and its allies.<\/p>\n

Brigadier General Christopher Horner, Commander of the Canadian Forces Space Command, noted that there is no confirmation of the existence of such a system, but does not consider such a scenario impossible. He stated that if Russia is willing to consider deploying nuclear weapons in space, then the development of other equally dangerous systems is also not surprising.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that Poland would cease funding Starlink for Ukraine<\/a> after President Karol Nawrocki vetoed a bill that would have allowed continued support through the Ukrainian Aid Fund.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, in 2022, American billionaire Elon Musk ordered the shutdown of Starlink satellite terminals over parts of occupied Ukrainian territory<\/a> , including Kherson, which was then controlled by Russia.<\/p>\n
