The Central Election Commission admits that if the election process starts in Ukraine, the current format of the “United News” telethon may conflict with the requirements of election legislation and will need to be revised.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was stated<\/a> by Deputy Chairman of the Central Election Commission Serhiy Dubovik on Radio Liberty.<\/p>\n

According to him, an election campaign by its nature involves open competition of political positions and equal access to the media, while the telethon was created in wartime conditions as an information security tool.<\/p>\n

“Today, there are restrictions dictated by the need to counter hostile propaganda. We all work within the framework of adopted state decisions. But the electoral process is a different reality, in which free expression of opinions must be ensured,” explained Dubovyk.<\/p>\n

He noted that if the election campaign begins, the state will be forced to seek a balance between security challenges and democratic standards, in particular freedom of speech and access of political forces to the airwaves.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the CEC emphasizes that any changes to the information regime are possible only under the condition of a stable security situation. If the threat from Russia persists, there can be no talk of a complete lifting of restrictions in the media space.<\/p>\n

Thus, the question of the future telethon directly depends on the combination of two factors – the country’s readiness for the elections and the real level of security risks.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, Ukraine has begun preparations for possible elections under martial law<\/a> . For the first time since the start of the full-scale invasion, the Central Election Commission has resumed the work of the State Voter Register.<\/p>\n

As reported, according to the results of the study, 47% of respondents do not support holding elections at various levels in the near future<\/a> , while 36.5% of respondents supported this idea. Another 16.5% could not decide on an answer.<\/p>\n
