The occupation authorities in Mariupol announce plans to host up to a million tourists by 2030.

This is reported by the British publication The Times.

The publication says that Russian-controlled administrations in the Donetsk region are trying to use the war as a tool to attract tourists and develop the local economy. Kirill Makarov, the deputy prime minister of the so-called “DPR”, said that they plan to take visitors to “key places of military glory.”

The publication recalls that Russia began its aggression against Ukraine in Donbas back in 2014, and after the full-scale invasion, the region became the scene of some of the fiercest battles of the war. In particular, the battle for Bakhmut cost tens of thousands of Russian soldiers their lives before Moscow captured the destroyed city.

The authors of the material pay special attention to Mariupol, which Russian troops almost completely destroyed by bombing in 2022. At the same time, the occupation authorities do not explain which cities they plan to take tourists to and how they intend to guarantee their safety.

The “military tourism” project is part of Russia’s nationwide program “Tourism and Hospitality”, the launch of which is planned for 2026. According to Makarov, they want to allocate about a billion rubles to the restoration of hotels and tourist infrastructure in the Donetsk region. The sources of funding are not specified.

Ukrainian journalist Halyna Koynash noted that these funds will not be enough even for the basic restoration of the destroyed infrastructure, not to mention creating conditions for tourism.

The Times also draws attention to the difficult humanitarian situation in the region. Due to damage to water supply systems, residents are often left without water, digging makeshift wells or collecting rainwater. The publication mentions a video in which children ask the Russian president to help with water supply.

Kremlin-appointed mayor of Mariupol, Oleg Morgun, acknowledged serious infrastructure problems, but said the city could welcome up to a million tourists by 2030. He also announced the restoration of the Drama Theater, where the first performances are planned for the New Year period.

It was previously reported that the chances of concluding a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia remain low, as the Kremlin does not demonstrate a willingness to compromise and continues to insist on its initial military demands.

Let us recall that the Russian authorities are waging a war against Ukraine mainly at the expense of residents of poor regions and ethnic minorities, while representatives of the elite almost do not participate in hostilities.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram .

Russia is developing a project for so-called “military tourism” in the temporarily occupied territories of Donbas, despite the war and destroyed infrastructure.
