Ukrainians may soon no longer find familiar names for alcoholic beverages like “cognac” or “champagne” on store shelves. Starting January 1, Ukraine will suspend the use of several EU protected geographical indications under the Association Agreement.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Specifically, this concerns the names “cognac,” “champagne,” “port,” and “sherry.” Their removal is due to the international rules of the World Trade Organization, which treat geographical names as trademarks and oblige countries to protect them.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In fact, the changes will affect product labeling. Manufacturers will continue to produce the same drinks, but under new names: “brandy,” “sparkling wine,” or “fortified wine.” To do this, companies will have to update their labels.<\/p>\n

Not all manufacturers have had time to fully prepare for the transition. Some admit that the war and the business crisis meant this issue wasn’t a priority. Meanwhile, other companies declare their readiness for the changes and see no significant challenges.<\/p>\n

Some major manufacturers are finishing production of the last batches of drinks under the old names, after which they will completely switch to the new labeling. Violating the rules for using geographical indications carries fines ranging from 5 to 15 minimum wages, which will amount to over 40,000 hryvnias starting in 2026.<\/p>\n
