U.S. President Donald Trump will host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at Mar-a-Lago on Sunday to discuss a peace plan that would include a temporary ceasefire needed to hold a referendum on the status of certain territories.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The meeting follows a series of talks in Florida between Trump advisers Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and top negotiators from Ukraine and Russia. Ukrainian officials said the meeting was scheduled for Sunday. The White House had no immediate comment.<\/p>\n

“We are not wasting a single day. We have agreed on a meeting at the highest level – with President Trump in the near future. A lot can be decided before the New Year,” Zelensky said after a briefing by his chief negotiator Rustam Umerov.<\/p>\n

The talks have been ongoing for the past two months and even extended over the Christmas holidays. Zelensky spoke with Witkoff and Kushner on Thursday, and the advisers later held additional talks with Ukrainian and Russian officials. The Kremlin said Yuri Ushakov, President Vladimir Putin’s foreign policy adviser, also spoke with his American counterparts.<\/p>\n

Most of the terms of the deal have already been agreed upon between the US and Ukraine, including the security guarantees that the US and Europe can provide to Kyiv.<\/p>\n

“The US and Europe will provide Ukraine with security guarantees. If Russia invades Ukraine, there will be a military response and sanctions will be renewed,” Zelensky said during a briefing for journalists.<\/p>\n

The main problem remains Russia’s demands for control of all of Donbas. The US has proposed a demilitarized “free economic zone” in the territories from which Ukraine will withdraw its troops. Zelensky insists on mutual withdrawal of forces and a referendum to approve territorial concessions.<\/p>\n

Russia has agreed to a temporary ceasefire<\/strong> necessary for the referendum, a senior U.S. official said. Ukraine is proposing a 60-day truce, while Russia may insist on a shorter period. The U.S. supports a ceasefire for the vote, but the logistics of the measure remain complex.<\/p>\n

By the way, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has faced serious difficulties in trying to advance negotiations to end the war in Ukraine<\/a> . The optimism that prevailed last week has quickly faded.<\/p>\n

Earlier, US President’s special envoy Steve Witkoff spoke about the progress of negotiations with delegations from Ukraine, Russia, and European countries on a peaceful settlement of the war.<\/a> According to him, the parties discussed key documents and confirmed their readiness to continue working on a peace plan.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, the Elysee Palace welcomed the statement of readiness of Russian President Vladimir Putin for dialogue with French President Emmanuel Macron.<\/a><\/p>\n
