The US State Department has renewed its “do not travel” advisory for Russia and urged US citizens to leave the country immediately, citing high risks of unlawful detention, terrorism and arbitrary enforcement of local laws amid the escalating war between Russia and Ukraine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The State Department noted that the current warning was reissued without changes. The main threats listed were terrorism, unlawful detention, and arbitrary law enforcement by Russian authorities.<\/p>\n

The department emphasized that the possibilities for assisting US citizens in Russia are significantly limited due to the reduction in embassy staff in Moscow and the suspension of consulates.<\/p>\n

“US citizens in Russia should leave the country immediately. Russian officials often unreasonably interrogate and threaten US citizens,” the US State Department’s recommendation states.<\/p>\n

The warning also notes that there are precedents of Americans being arrested on trumped-up charges.<\/p>\n

“They were denied fair treatment and convicted without credible evidence,” the document states.<\/p>\n

Americans were also advised not to bring electronic devices into Russia, the agency recommends assuming that all electronic communications and devices are under surveillance.<\/p>\n

Due to sanctions, US bank cards do not work in Russia, and electronic money transfers from the United States to Russia are almost impossible. It is also stated that tourists who still decide to travel to Russia should be prepared for possible indefinite detention.<\/p>\n

“Be prepared for the possibility of detention for an unknown period of time,” the warning says.<\/p>\n

Americans were also advised to log out of all social media accounts and not use them while in Russia, as well as prepare a will and identify insurance beneficiaries or a trustee.<\/p>\n

The document notes that the border regions of Russia and Ukraine have been under martial law since October 2022. Under these conditions, the authorities can impose curfews, seize property, restrict movement, detain foreigners, forcibly relocate residents, and ban mass gatherings.<\/p>\n

“Russian authorities have interrogated, detained, and arrested individuals for actions they deemed contrary to Russia’s interests,” the US State Department said.<\/p>\n
