Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has prepared a plan to escape the country in case anti-government protests escalate and he loses control over the security forces.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the newspaper’s sources, the 86-year-old ayatollah has a so-called “Plan B”, which involves immediately leaving Tehran with a narrow circle of up to 20 of his closest aides and family members. The plan can be used if the army or security forces begin to refuse to follow orders, desert or side with the protesters.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Former Israeli intelligence officer Bani Sabti said that if Khamenei were to flee, he would likely head to Moscow. He said the Iranian leader admires Vladimir Putin and considers Russian culture close to Iranian.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Times sources say the escape plan includes pre-arranged assets, overseas real estate and cash to ensure a safe exit. Khamenei controls a wide network of assets, including through the semi-state structure Setad.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A 2013 Reuters investigation estimated the combined value of these assets at around $95 billion.<\/p>\n

It is also known that many of Khamenei’s closest associates have already taken their relatives abroad – in particular to the United States, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n

Earlier, it was reported that Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez stated that Caracas was ready to work with the US government and proposed developing a “cooperation program.”<\/a><\/p>\n
