Scientists have recorded the melting process of the “Doomsday Glacier” (Thwaites) in Antarctica, which may lead to negative consequences in some Ukrainian settlements.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This<\/span> was reported by<\/span><\/a> the journal Nature Geosciences.<\/span><\/p>\n

As noted, warm currents that erode the ice from below make it less stable, so it starts to move faster.<\/span><\/p>\n

Experts say deep cracks and voids are forming in the glacier. If part of it falls away, it will begin to move towards warmer waters. This will accelerate the melting process.<\/span><\/p>\n

Researchers are convinced that if the Doomsday Glacier melts completely, the level of the World Ocean could rise by 60 centimeters.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this case, coastal cities will suffer: low-lying areas of New York, Amsterdam, and Venice could be flooded. Ukraine is also at risk, with some areas of Odessa, Mykolaiv, and Kherson at risk.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, the melting of Thwaites could trigger a chain reaction in West Antarctica, raising the water level by 2-3 meters.<\/span><\/p>\n
