The vessel is linked to exporting Russian oil in circumvention of international sanctions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p> This is reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/americas\/u-s-forces-board-fifth-tanker-in-campaign-to-track-down-venezuelan-oil-08d1721f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a> .<\/p>\n<p> It is noted that the tanker was detained on Friday, January 9. This is the fifth such interception of vessels in recent weeks as part of the US&#8217;s increased control over compliance with the sanctions regime.<\/p>\n<p> US officials said the US Coast Guard boarded the oil tanker and continued to monitor other vessels that were trying to circumvent a blockade on tankers heading to and from Venezuela that are under sanctions.<\/p>\n<p> Reuters journalists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/us-process-seizing-olina-tanker-caribbean-us-official-says-2026-01-09\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">noted<\/a> that the Olina, according to the open shipping database Equasis, mistakenly flew the flag of East Timor and had previously left Venezuela. After that, the tanker returned to the region, where it was detained by US forces.<\/p>\n<p> According <a href=\"https:\/\/war-sanctions.gur.gov.ua\/ru\/transport\/shadow-fleet\/606\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to<\/a> the Main Intelligence Directorate, during the G7+ oil embargo, the tanker was involved in exporting Russian oil and petroleum products from Russian ports in the Baltic, Black Seas, and the Pacific region. The main destinations for supplies were China, India, and Turkey.<\/p>\n<p> The international environmental organization Greenpeace refers to this vessel as part of the so-called &#8220;shadow fleet&#8221;, which transports Russian oil around the world and, according to the organization, poses a threat to the environment.<\/p>\n<p> Due to the transportation of Russian oil and petroleum products, the tanker is under sanctions by a number of countries. Restrictions were imposed by:<\/p>\n<ul><\/p>\n<li> United Kingdom &#8211; December 17, 2024;<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li> USA &#8211; January 10, 2025;<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li> Canada &#8211; February 21, 2025.<\/li>\n<p><\/ul>\n<p> As a reminder, <a href=\"https:\/\/prm.ua\/ssha-zakhopyly-rosiyskyy-naftovyy-tanker-iakyy-peresliduvaly-dva-tyzhni\/\">the United States of America conducted an operation to seize the oil tanker Mariner<\/a> , bound for Venezuela and flying the Russian flag.<\/p>\n<p> Later, <a href=\"https:\/\/prm.ua\/zhodna-derzhava-ne-maie-prava-zastosovuvaty-sylu-v-rf-prokomentuvaly-zakhoplennia-ssha-naftovoho-tankera\/\">Russia reacted to the seizure by the United States of an oil tanker<\/a> flying the Russian flag &#8211; the Foreign Ministry demanded that the American side treat the Russians on board humanely.<\/p>\n<p> By the way, the White House reported that <a href=\"https:\/\/prm.ua\/ssha-planuie-sudyty-rosiian-iaki-perebuvaly-na-zakhoplenomu-naftovomu-tankeri\/\">the United States plans to prosecute the crew of an oil tanker<\/a> seized by the US Coast Guard, including Russians.
