Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, Prime Minister Robert Fico and Speaker of the National Council Richard Rasi have agreed to stop providing further military support to Ukraine. The government also does not plan to participate in the European Union’s \u20ac90 billion guarantees for Ukraine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Slovakia’s leaders met for a joint lunch, where they discussed key issues of the country’s domestic and foreign policy. Peter Pellegrini noted that the conversation was “open, constructive and pragmatic” and covered all topics important to the country.<\/p>\n

The president told reporters that Slovakia will still have its representative at the negotiations of the so-called “coalition of the determined”, but Bratislava does not plan to continue military assistance to Ukraine and will not send its military.<\/p>\n

In addition, Pellegrini stated that Slovakia will not participate in providing guarantees for the European Union’s loan to Ukraine worth 90 billion euros.<\/p>\n

The Slovak government’s position on Ukraine is also being strengthened in the rhetoric of the defense ministry. Slovak Defense Minister Robert Kaliniak previously stated that Ukraine, according to him, will never become a member of NATO and will face great difficulties on the way to joining the European Union.<\/p>\n

“Ukraine had a chance to end the war back in 2022, but did not take advantage of it,” said Robert Kaliniak.<\/p>\n

These statements provoked a sharp reaction from Ukrainian politicians and experts, who view such a position as an actual play on Russian rhetoric.<\/p>\n

Recall that Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that he would not support the European Commission’s proposal to provide Ukraine with a reparations loan from frozen Russian assets<\/a> if this money is used for defense needs.<\/p>\n

By the way, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that several Alliance member states, including Hungary, the United States, and Slovakia, oppose Ukraine’s accession to NATO<\/a> . According to him, this position makes it impossible to make a decision by unanimous vote, despite the agreements of the 2024 Washington Summit.<\/p>\n
