In 2026-2027, Russia plans to massively return decommissioned Soviet and foreign-made aircraft to service due to an acute shortage of aircraft fleet.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by<\/a> the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to the SZRU, most of the aircraft that the Kremlin decided to return to flight are over 30 years old. This is a forced step against the backdrop of a reduction in the fleet and the lack of opportunities for its full renewal.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

As part of the renewal program extended until 2027, Russia has already put 10 of the 12 planned aircraft into service, including the Tu-204\/214, Il-96, and An-148. In 2026-2027, it is planned to transfer two more restored Tu-204s to airlines, despite their moral and technical obsolescence.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

At the same time, Russian airlines are decommissioning foreign aircraft. In particular, Rossiya Airlines is increasing its fleet of Boeing 747s inherited after the bankruptcy of Transaero. Liners over 20 years old are returning to flights after many years of storage due to the lack of alternative equipment.<\/p>\n

As of October 2025, the fleet of Russia’s largest airlines had 1,135 aircraft, of which 1,088 were in operation. At the same time, 67% of the aircraft fleet consists of foreign-made aircraft, the maintenance of which is complicated by sanctions and a shortage of spare parts.<\/p>\n

The crisis has been particularly severe in cargo aviation. Air cargo turnover in Russia has decreased from 9.2 billion ton-kilometers in 2021 to 1.9 billion in 2024.<\/p>\n
