In the United States, bad weather has led to a large-scale traffic accident. On Monday, January 19, heavy snowfall in the Great Lakes region provoked a chain of accidents on the interstate highway I-196 in Michigan. Due to a sharp deterioration in visibility and slippery road surface, more than a hundred vehicles, including more than three dozen trucks with semi-trailers, were involved in an accident or drove off the roadway.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Law enforcement officers were forced to completely stop traffic on this stretch of highway in both directions southwest of Grand Rapids. According to preliminary data, the incident did not result in any deaths, but there were reports of injuries. To safely evacuate drivers and passengers, buses were used to transport people to a local educational institution, where a temporary aid station was organized.<\/p>\n

Road services, tow trucks and rescue teams are working at the scene of the accident. According to the towing company, the main task at the moment is to clear the road of snow and damaged vehicles, while traffic will remain restricted for several more hours.<\/p>\n

The massive collision was one of the consequences of a powerful winter storm that has covered much of the United States. Forecasters are warning of severe frosts and heavy snowfall in the region from Minnesota to the Atlantic coast. The bad weather has even reached the southern states – in Florida and neighboring regions, night frosts are predicted.<\/p>\n

The situation is particularly difficult in the northeastern United States, where the storm has become the most powerful in recent years. In this regard, the authorities of the states of New York and New Jersey have introduced a state of emergency.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, in Indiana, heavy snowfall caused a collision involving about 45 vehicles on one of the key highways.<\/a> As a result, traffic on the westbound lane of I-70 was completely blocked and temporary restrictions were imposed.<\/p>\n

As reported, two high-speed passenger trains collided<\/a> in southern Spain near the town of Adamas in the autonomous community of Andalusia. The accident killed at least 39 people and injured dozens more, some of them in serious condition.<\/p>\n
