The Supreme Anti-Corruption Court has sentenced former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in absentia to 15 years in prison in the case of illegal seizure of hunting grounds in Sukholuchye. The sentence also includes full confiscation of property and a ban on holding public office.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The decision was announced on January 20, 2026. The court concluded that Yanukovych illegally appropriated a 17.5-hectare forest land plot in the Kyiv region. Its value, according to investigators, exceeds 22 million hryvnias.<\/p>\n

The ex-president’s actions were classified as a particularly serious crime – appropriation of state property on a particularly large scale. In addition to the prison term, the sentence includes a ban on holding any positions in government and local government bodies for three years.<\/p>\n

In the same case, the court also found one of Yanukovych’s accomplices guilty, but he avoided actual punishment because the statute of limitations for criminal liability had expired.<\/p>\n

If no appeal is filed, the verdict will take effect in 30 days.<\/p>\n

According to the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, the scheme began operating in 2007, when Yanukovych was prime minister. It was then, according to the prosecution, that a series of administrative decisions were initiated that allowed the lands of the Dniprovsko-Teterivskoye forestry and hunting enterprise to be withdrawn from state ownership.<\/p>\n

The land was registered through controlled entities: first, the land was transferred to citizens within the permitted areas, after which its intended purpose was changed. This opened the way for the transfer of assets to a company associated with Yanukovych.<\/p>\n

Between 2009 and 2011, a hotel and restaurant complex appeared on the occupied territory, which, according to the case materials, was used by the ex-president for private purposes.<\/p>\n

Criminal proceedings regarding these events were opened in 2014. Initially, it was investigated by the Prosecutor General’s Office, and later the case was transferred to the NABU and the SAPO. Since all the accused are wanted, the trial was held in absentia.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, the court verdict against former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and the deputy head of the State Protection Department has entered into force. Yanukovych was sentenced to 15 years in prison for organizing the illegal smuggling of people across the state border and inciting desertion.<\/a><\/p>\n
