In India, oil refineries are reviewing their purchasing strategies and planning to reduce oil imports from Russia while increasing supplies from the Middle East and the United States.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As the agency notes, a change in approach to oil imports could help India secure a trade agreement with the United States to reduce tariffs. After 2022, the country became the largest buyer of Russian oil, which provoked a negative reaction from countries that imposed sanctions against Russia.<\/p>\n

According to Reuters sources, the reduction in purchases of Russian oil began after discussions in the Indian government about accelerating the conclusion of a trade agreement with the United States.<\/p>\n

In particular, the state-owned oil refiner Bharat Petroleum Corp. has announced tenders to purchase oil from Iraq and Oman, and is also considering importing from the UAE. Starting in April 2026, Trafigura is to supply India with oil from Oman and Iraq at below-market prices.<\/p>\n

In addition, state-owned Hindustan Petroleum, the Mangalore Oil Refinery and Petrochemical Plant, and private companies HPCL-Mittal Energy Ltd. have already refused to buy Russian oil.<\/p>\n

In December, India’s total oil imports from Russia fell to their lowest level in two years. Meanwhile, supplies from the US, South America, and Africa increased significantly.<\/p>\n

As is known, American legislators have introduced a bipartisan bill in the Senate that would impose sanctions for purchasing or facilitating the import of oil and petroleum products from Russia.<\/a><\/p>\n
