NATO military leaders have considered a scenario in which Denmark could allow the United States to gain control over certain areas of Greenland for the placement of American military facilities.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the publication, during closed consultations, senior NATO officials discussed a compromise option that would grant the United States sovereignty over small areas of land on the island for the purpose of building military bases. This was reported by three officials briefed on the negotiations.<\/p>\n

Two participants in the meeting, as the NYT notes, compared the possible model to British military bases in Cyprus, which are legally considered United Kingdom territory, although located outside its borders.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the publication’s interlocutors emphasized that they have no confirmation whether this idea is part of a broader agreement previously announced by US President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

Commenting on the possible arrangements, NATO said that consultations between Denmark, Greenland and the United States were ongoing. Their goal, the alliance said, is to prevent Russia or China from gaining an economic or military foothold in Greenland.<\/p>\n
