Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever said that Russian frozen assets will not be used at least until a peace agreement is concluded between Ukraine and Russia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He said<\/span><\/a> this<\/span> at the Ukrainian Breakfast in Davos.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to him, the confiscation of Russian assets is an act of war, and \u201cEurope is not at war with Russia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

“If I can influence this, every penny of these funds will be used for the benefit of Ukraine. I would be very sorry if at least the euro returns to Russia,” the Belgian Prime Minister noted.<\/span><\/p>\n

He stressed the need to respect international law and added that even during World War II, such a practice was not used.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, the Russian Federation will still not be able to access the funds until the end of the war, and the assets will remain frozen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recall that Belgium criticized the European Commission’s new proposal<\/a> to transfer frozen Russian assets to Ukraine, stating that the document is “categorically unacceptable.”<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that the European Union was working on an urgent legal mechanism<\/a> that would allow frozen Russian money to be safely used to lend to Ukraine, avoiding risks for Belgium.<\/p>\n

As is known,the European Union was preparing an alternative financing scenario for Ukraine<\/a> in case the leaders failed to agree on using frozen Russian assets to create a reparations loan.<\/p>\n
