A sanctioned oil tanker from Russia’s shadow fleet, which was transporting Russian oil, is drifting in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Algeria.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the agency, the Progress tanker was heading east along the coast of North Africa towards the Suez Canal with a cargo of about 730,000 barrels of Russian Urals oil. After passing Algeria, the ship abruptly changed course, turned north and went outside the main shipping lanes.<\/p>\n

On Thursday morning, the tanker’s navigational status changed to “Not Under Control” and speed dropped to approximately 1 knot. As of Friday afternoon, Progress continued to drift eastward at minimal speed.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Equasis international shipping database lists Legacy Marine LLC from St. Petersburg as the ship’s manager. Analysts say the departure from shipping lanes, change in navigation status, and sharp drop in speed indicate a mechanical malfunction on board.<\/p>\n

The Progress tanker is under sanctions by the European Union and the United Kingdom for its involvement in the transportation of Russian oil. The 19-year-old vessel has changed its name twice since being placed on the sanctions lists, recently transferred to the Russian flag and was entered into the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping in November.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that French naval forces, supported by intelligence provided by the United Kingdom, intercepted a Russian shadow fleet tanker in the Mediterranean Sea.<\/a><\/p>\n
