A new outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus has been recorded in India. Five cases have been confirmed and nearly 100 people have been placed under home quarantine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Earlier this week, 2 cases of infection among medical personnel were confirmed, and later 3 more new cases of infection. After the first patient was identified, the authorities decided to isolate contacts.<\/p>\n

The new confirmed cases include a doctor, a nurse, and a medical facility employee. All of them were in contact with previously infected patients.<\/p>\n

A West Bengal health department official said the condition of one of the health workers was improving, while the other patient was in a critical condition. Both were being treated in the intensive care unit.<\/p>\n

Experts say the infection likely came from animals, primarily bats. Former president of the Indian Medical Association, Rajiv Jayadevan, explained that cases of human infection with the Nipah virus are rare and are associated with accidental contact with bats, including through consumption of fruit that may have been infected.<\/p>\n

“This is more likely in rural areas and areas near forests, where agricultural activities increase contact between humans and fruit bats searching for food,” said Rajiv Jayadevan.<\/p>\n

At the same time, journalists from The Independent report that some experts fear a possible mutation of the virus. It is noted that the Nipah virus was first discovered in 1998 after outbreaks among farmers in Malaysia and Singapore.<\/p>\n
