A powerful winter storm, Fern, has swept across much of the United States. States of emergency have been declared in 16 states and the District of Columbia, and the bodies of three people, presumed dead from the extreme cold, were found on the streets of New York City.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A sharp drop in temperatures and icy conditions created hazardous conditions on roads across the Midwest and South. Streets and highways were covered in ice, and power grid operators implemented enhanced precautions to avoid widespread power outages.<\/p>\n

According to NBC, on January 24, police in New York City discovered the body of a 67-year-old man on a sidewalk, followed by two more people\u2014a 30-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman. All cases are preliminarily linked to extreme weather conditions.<\/p>\n

The storm also significantly disrupted air travel. According to FlightAware, as of January 24, nearly 14,000 flights in the US and abroad were canceled through January 26.<\/p>\n

National Weather Service meteorologist Allison Santorelli noted that this storm is characterized by prolonged freezing temperatures after the main impact. She added that snow and ice will melt very slowly, complicating recovery efforts.<\/p>\n

Forecasters predict that more than 160 million Americans will feel the storm’s impact. Extended power outages, transportation disruptions, tree damage, and hazardous conditions are expected.<\/p>\n

On January 23, US President Donald Trump announced that he had been informed of the record-breaking cold wave and historic winter storm sweeping the country. He said the administration was coordinating with state and local authorities, urging citizens to exercise caution and stay warm.<\/p>\n
