The United States has deported one of the defendants in the largest jewelry heist in the country’s history, Jason Nelon Presilia Flores, preventing his trial and sparking criticism of immigration practices.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A jewelry heist took place in California in 2022. According to US federal authorities, criminals stole about $100 million worth of jewelry after tracking down a Brink’s armored collection vehicle. The stolen items included diamonds, rubies, emeralds, gold, and luxury watches.<\/p>\n

Jeson Nelon Presilla Flores was one of seven men accused of involvement in the crime. He was deported to Ecuador without the knowledge of federal prosecutors, effectively depriving the court of the opportunity to proceed with criminal proceedings against him.<\/p>\n

Flores’ lawyer asked the court to dismiss the case, saying the government had abandoned criminal prosecution by deporting the defendant. He also noted that after the court granted Flores bail, ICE immediately took him into custody.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors said that the civil immigration process is formally separate from the criminal prosecution. In their view, Flores effectively chose deportation over the risk of a lengthy prison sentence in the United States.<\/p>\n

Lawyers and prosecutors say that amid tougher immigration policies, the deportation of defendants before trials are complete is becoming more common, depriving victims of the opportunity to seek justice and bring their cases to a close.<\/p>\n

One of the jewelers who was affected by the robbery said that this situation leaves him in legal limbo and undermines confidence in the justice system, as the stolen jewels were the result of years of work.<\/p>\n

Recall that on the morning of October 19, a high-profile robbery took place in Paris<\/a> – the attackers stole nine jewels from Napoleon’s collection. The incident closed the Louvre for the whole day. Within minutes, they entered the Apollo Gallery<\/a> and stole several jewels from the French crown collection.<\/p>\n
