Atomic scientists have moved the hands of the Doomsday Clock closer to midnight again, now showing 85 seconds to the symbolic end of the world. This is the most dangerous mark in the clock’s history.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is reported by<\/a> the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists magazine.<\/p>\n

The decision was announced on January 27 during the annual press conference. Compared to last year, the hands were moved forward by another four seconds – and they have never been so close to midnight since the clock was created in 1947.<\/p>\n

Midnight on the Doomsday Clock does not represent a specific date or event. It is a conventional boundary that symbolizes the moment when humanity, through its own decisions, makes the planet uninhabitable.<\/p>\n

Explaining the new adjustment, scientists cited several reasons at once. Among them are aggressive actions by nuclear powers, including Russia, China, and the United States, weakening nuclear arms control, and wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.<\/p>\n

The rapid development of artificial intelligence is of particular concern. Scientists warn that the unregulated use of AI in military systems could lead to abuse, new biological risks and the widespread spread of disinformation. Climate change also remains a long-term threat.<\/p>\n

Alexandra Bell, president of Bulletin magazine, emphasized that humanity has not yet been able to significantly reduce the level of global risks.<\/p>\n

“Humanity has not made enough progress in combating existential risks. Every second counts, and time is running out,” Bell said.<\/p>\n
