This amounts to dozens of tons, which looks like a forced sale of reserves amid financial pressure and problems with filling the budget.

This was reported by the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine.

According to the SZRU, during the year, the Russian Federation supplied 25.3 tons of gold to China – nine times more than in 2024. In monetary terms, exports increased to $3.29 billion compared to $223 million a year earlier.

Supplies were uneven. The main volumes fell on February-March and October-December. The largest surge was recorded in December, when Russia sold about 10 tons of gold worth $1.35 billion, which is more than 40% of the annual volume.

The SZRU notes that such a concentration at the end of the year indicates the use of gold as a tool for quick fundraising. Exports were carried out mainly in the form of bars, which allows for rapid monetization of reserves.

In parallel with the growth of exports, a rapid reduction in domestic reserves is being recorded. As of January 1, 2026, about 160 tons of gold remained in the Russian Federation’s national wealth fund, while in 2022 this figure exceeded 550 tons.

Intelligence associates this dynamic with sanctions pressure and loss of access to Western trade infrastructure. As a result, Russia has effectively redirected gold flows to Asia, primarily China, using reserves to plug budget gaps.

As previously reported, global copper prices rose sharply in January 2026 and reached their highest in more than 16 years.

Recall that on January 26, world gold prices reached a new historical high, exceeding $5,000 per troy ounce for the first time .

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram.

In 2025, Russia sharply increased its gold sales to China.
