Damage to the power grid poses risks to the stable operation of nuclear power plants and increases the threat of a nuclear accident.

This is reported by Bloomberg .

It is noted that Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure are depriving three operating nuclear power plants of the stable electricity supply necessary for the safe operation of the reactors. Diplomats have called a meeting of the IAEA board of directors to discuss the consequences of attacks on critical infrastructure that keeps the power system running.

Nuclear reactors require a continuous power supply to support safety systems. If it is lost, there is a risk of overheating the fuel in the reactor core, which could cause dangerous radiation releases.

“We have serious concerns about the significant and growing nuclear safety risks associated with nuclear power plants in Ukraine,” said Dutch Ambassador to the IAEA, Peter Potman.

He added that the prospect of a nuclear accident was already “on the verge of becoming a reality,” and insisted on holding an emergency meeting of the agency.

European countries are demanding that the IAEA provide a detailed assessment of the vulnerability of Ukraine’s power system by next month. The agency’s monitors are currently in Ukraine inspecting substations that provide electricity to nuclear power plants.

“Any damage to this infrastructure undermines nuclear safety and must be avoided. Every effort must be made to ensure the continued availability and security of external power supplies,” said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.

It is reported that there are thousands of substations in Ukraine, but 10 key nodes are critical for the operation of nuclear power plants, damage to which could lead to large-scale power outages and a radiological accident.

“All operating nuclear power plants in Ukraine have been forced to reduce electricity production in recent weeks,” the European Union said in a statement.

The statement also notes that the attacks significantly increase the risks to the security systems of nuclear facilities.

First Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal reported that Ukraine initiated the issue of suspending Russia’s membership in the IAEA Board of Governors and amending the agency’s charter to restrict the rights of the aggressor state.

“Today, an extraordinary meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors took place. The meeting was initiated at the request of Ukraine. Russia systematically and purposefully attacked electrical substations that provide external power supply to Ukrainian nuclear power plants. This is an undermining of one of the seven pillars of nuclear safety identified by the IAEA,” said Denys Shmyhal.

Separate attention was paid to the situation around the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which has completely lost external power supply 12 times since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

“We called on member states to impose comprehensive sanctions against Rosatom and limit cooperation with this company in all possible areas. We raised the issue of suspending Russia’s membership in the IAEA Board of Governors, and also discussed the intention to initiate amendments to the Agency’s Statute in order to limit the rights of the aggressor state,” said Denys Shmyhal.

It was previously reported that the Russians have changed their tactics in shelling Ukrainian energy facilities : previously, the occupiers dispersed attacks across several areas, but now they are concentrating strikes on a specific region or large city.

The day before, former head of Ukrenergo Volodymyr Kudrytskyi said that Russia is avoiding direct strikes on reactors, focusing on Ukrenergo’s hub substations, through which the power of the nuclear power plant is supplied. This strategy is explained by the enemy’s fear of a harsh international reaction to open nuclear terrorism.

Recall that Sergey “Flash” Beskrestnov stated that nuclear power plants are currently the only stable sources of electricity generation in Ukraine. That is why, if Russia seeks to completely cut off the country’s electricity supply, it may focus on attacks on facilities related to nuclear power plants.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram.

An emergency meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been convened in Vienna due to threats to Ukraine’s nuclear security resulting from attacks on energy infrastructure.
