{"id":1352284,"date":"2026-02-02T09:36:33","date_gmt":"2026-02-02T07:36:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prm.ua\/strategically-harmful-consequences-for-ukraine-how-the-kremlin-uses-non-military-issues-to-pressure-the-us\/"},"modified":"2026-02-02T09:36:33","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T07:36:33","slug":"strategically-harmful-consequences-for-ukraine-how-the-kremlin-uses-non-military-issues-to-pressure-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prm.ua\/en\/strategically-harmful-consequences-for-ukraine-how-the-kremlin-uses-non-military-issues-to-pressure-the-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Strategically harmful consequences for Ukraine: how the Kremlin uses non-military issues to pressure the US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Kremlin is trying to use non-war issues to extract concessions from the Trump administration on Ukraine, which analysts say could have strategically damaging consequences for Ukraine.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p> This <a href=\"https:\/\/understandingwar.org\/research\/russia-ukraine\/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-february-1-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was reported<\/a> by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW).<\/p>\n<p> Analysts note that the Kremlin continues to use tools not directly related to the war to pressure the United States on the issue of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p> ISW, analyzing statements by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on February 1, indicated that Moscow is considering the prospects of economic agreements or negotiations on strategic arms as a way to persuade Donald Trump to make concessions in favor of Russia.<\/p>\n<p> In particular, it concerns the Kremlin&#8217;s efforts to ensure that the United States does not involve Europe in the peace process regarding Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p> Analysts also drew attention to insider reports that, they said, indicate Russia&#8217;s attempts to position itself to an external audience as a party interested in negotiations.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cInsider reports continue to demonstrate that Russia is trying to present itself to external audiences as a willing negotiator to gain control of the entire Donetsk region through diplomatic means,\u201d ISW noted.<\/p>\n<p> The Institute for the Study of War recalled that the initial 28-point peace plan proposed by the United States provided for Ukraine to give up the entire Donetsk and Luhansk regions, as well as freeze the front line in the Zaporizhia and Kherson regions.<\/p>\n<p> According to ISW, subsequent US-Ukrainian proposals included the creation of a demilitarized zone or \u201cfree economic zone\u201d in the Donetsk region.<\/p>\n<p> Analysts also noted that in December 2025, the Kremlin rejected a proposal to create a demilitarized zone in the Donetsk region.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cThe Kremlin may be trying to portray Russia as agreeing to a so-called \u2018concession\u2019 of freezing the line in southern Ukraine to prevent further US-Ukrainian negotiations on a demilitarized or economic zone in the unoccupied areas of Donetsk Oblast,\u201d ISW concluded.<\/p>\n<p> Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that <a href=\"https:\/\/prm.ua\/zelenskyy-zaiavyv-shcho-nastupni-trystoronni-zustrichi-vidbudutsia-4-ta-5-liutoho-v-abu-dabi\/\">the next talks between Ukraine, the US, and Russia in Abu Dhabi would be held on February 4 and 5.<\/a> Later, the media pointed out that <a href=\"https:\/\/prm.ua\/druhyy-raund-trystoronnikh-perehovoriv-v-abu-dabi-perenesly-u-zmi-nazvaly-prychyny\/\">the reason for postponing the talks<\/a> could be a meeting between US and Russian representatives in Florida.<\/p>\n<p> Recall that the Special Representative of the President of the United States, Steve Witkoff, stated that the meetings in <a href=\"https:\/\/prm.ua\/spetspredstavnyky-ssha-ta-rosii-provely-perehovory-shchodo-ukrainy-pershi-detali-zustrichi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Florida with the Russian Special Representative, Kirill Dmitriev,<\/a> were productive and constructive.
