Public criticism of European partners during President Volodymyr Zelensky’s speech in Davos negatively affected the attitude of allies and played into the hands of Ukraine’s enemies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was stated by diplomat Konstantin Yeliseyev on the air of the Pryamy<\/a> TV channel.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“There are clear messages from Brussels that our partners were very concerned and unpleasantly impressed by the tone of the president’s speech in Davos, where he criticized Europe,” said Yeliseyev.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to him, European partners recognize that they are not perfect and understand why they are criticized, but they do not accept the public format of such accusations.
“Even Europeans say privately: we understand that we are not perfect, we understand why we are criticized, but why do it publicly?” the diplomat noted.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Yeliseyev emphasized that EU leaders are politicians who depend on their voters, and such rhetoric complicates their domestic political position. He also recalled that Europe is Ukraine’s largest donor.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“Well, only the lazy don’t remember the 90 billion euros we received for 26-27 years,” he noted.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to the diplomat, discussions are currently underway in European countries, in particular in Germany, regarding the provision of this assistance.
“We have to pay 3 billion euros a year for this position, starting from the 28th year. And we have to pay it for at least 10, and sometimes even 20 years,” explained Yeliseyev.<\/p>\n

He noted that one option for covering these costs could be to increase taxes in EU countries, which is an extremely sensitive issue for voters.
“Even if you raise it by 1 euro, there are already big problems. Especially for politicians,” the diplomat added.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Yeliseyev said he understood the frustration of European partners after the president’s speech in Davos.
“And, of course, this played into Russia’s hands. And this absolutely does not play in the favor of building trust,” he said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Separately, the diplomat drew attention to the criticism of Germany in the president’s speech.
“Even German sources noticed that the speech contained quite a lot of criticism of Germany. And 25% of all the money out of these 90 billion is German money,” Yeliseyev noted.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He also recalled that Germany plays an important role in strengthening Ukrainian air defense.
“Last week, German Chancellor Merz had a telephone conversation with the President of Ukraine. He once again assured that they would provide another batch of the air defense systems we need. The Germans are doing everything possible and impossible,” the diplomat said.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Yeliseyev agreed that not all EU countries help Ukraine to the same extent, but emphasized that diplomatic channels exist for this.
“There are some countries that only sell air. They are beautiful in words. In reality, they have nothing,” he noted.<\/p>\n

As previously reported, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s accusations against Europe during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos were criticized by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.<\/a><\/p>\n
