Spain and Portugal have been hit hard by the effects of storm Leonardo, with heavy rains causing flooding and landslides, killing people and forcing thousands to evacuate.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A 60-year-old man has died in Portugal after being swept away by a floodwater while trying to cross a flooded road, the country’s civil protection service said.<\/p>\n

In southern Spain, the Andalusia region has been put on its highest alert level due to heavy rains, with forecasters warning of the risk of further flooding and landslides.<\/p>\n

Andalusia’s emergencies official, Antonio Sanz, called the situation in the mountain municipality of Grazalema “very worrying.”<\/p>\n

In Andalusia, about 3,500 people were evacuated. The military was called in to help deal with the aftermath. All schools in the region were closed, dozens of roads were blocked, bus services were cancelled, and rail services were almost completely halted.<\/p>\n

In Portugal, emergency services have received around 3,300 calls since Sunday, mostly due to flooding, landslides and fallen trees. Around 200 people have been evacuated in the central part of the country. <\/p>\n
