At the same time, relations between the EU and Turkey remain difficult due to the European side’s concerns about the state of democracy and the rule of law in the country.

To facilitate dialogue, EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos will visit Turkey on February 6. Ahead of the visit, she stated that ending the war in Ukraine would fundamentally change the situation in Europe, particularly in the Black Sea region, and that Turkey would become an important partner in shaping the new security architecture.

Politico notes that Turkey has the second-largest armed forces in NATO and controls the Bosphorus, which gives it significant influence on regional security. Ankara also played a key role in mediating the Black Sea Grain Agreement in 2022 and has stated its readiness to send a peacekeeping contingent to Ukraine if a peace agreement is reached with Russia.

Despite this, Turkey’s accession negotiations with the European Union have been effectively frozen since 2018 due to the EU’s reservations regarding derogation from European standards in democracy and the rule of law. At the same time, Ankara insists on updating the customs union agreement with the EU, concluded in 1995. Greece and Cyprus oppose a rapid warming of relations, demanding preliminary steps from Turkey.

Marta Kos noted that her visit to Ankara is aimed at restoring trust and finding ways to improve economic cooperation between the parties.

Turkey previously announced its readiness to send its troops to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping contingent, but only under clearly defined conditions.

Also follow “Pryamy” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram and Instagram.

The European Union views Turkey as a key strategic partner in shaping the post-war order for Ukraine and strengthening stability in the Black Sea region.
